At Dundee Active Schools, we are committed to investing in the people who help deliver sport and physical activity opportunities across our schools and communities. Through a wide range of training, mentoring and development opportunities, we support volunteers, young leaders, coaches and school staff to become confident, knowledgeable and inspiring deliverers.
Our aim is to ensure that every child and young person has access to safe, positive and inclusive sporting experiences led by individuals who have the skills, confidence and understanding to meet their needs.
Supporting Volunteers and Coaches
Active Schools works with volunteers and coaches from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels. Whether someone is taking their first steps into coaching or is looking to develop existing skills, we provide opportunities to learn, grow and gain valuable experience.
Our support includes:
- National Governing Body coaching qualifications
- Sports leader and leadership awards
- Child wellbeing and safeguarding training
- First aid qualifications
- Inclusive practice and disability awareness training
- Mental health awareness workshops
- Equality, diversity and inclusion training
- Practical coaching workshops and continued professional development opportunities
By providing access to these opportunities, we help build a workforce that is equipped to deliver high-quality sports sessions in schools and local communities.
Creating Inclusive Opportunities for All
Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do.
We work closely with coaches and volunteers to develop their understanding of how to adapt activities and create welcoming environments where all children and young people can participate, regardless of ability, background or experience.
Training focuses on developing skills such as:
- Adapting activities to meet individual needs
- Understanding and removing barriers to participation
- Creating positive and supportive environments
- Communicating effectively with diverse groups of young people
- Supporting children with additional support needs
- Promoting equality and respect in sport
This ensures our workforce has the confidence to provide opportunities that are engaging, enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
Developing Young Leaders
A key part of our training and development programme is supporting young people to become leaders within their schools and communities.
Through leadership programmes, volunteering experiences and mentoring opportunities, young people can develop valuable life skills including:
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Organisation
- Problem solving
- Confidence
- Leadership
These experiences not only support the delivery of school sport programmes but also help young people develop skills that benefit them in education, employment and future volunteering roles.
Ongoing Support and Mentoring
Training is only the beginning of the journey.
Active Schools Coordinators provide ongoing guidance, mentoring and support to coaches and volunteers throughout the year. We believe that practical experience, reflection and continuous learning are essential in helping deliverers reach their full potential.
Through observation, feedback, networking opportunities and ongoing professional learning, we help individuals continue to develop and improve their delivery skills.
Making a Positive Difference
By investing in training and development, Dundee Active Schools is helping to create a skilled, confident and inclusive workforce that can inspire children and young people to participate in sport and physical activity.
Together, our coaches, volunteers and young leaders play a vital role in ensuring that every child has the opportunity to be active, develop new skills, build confidence and enjoy the many benefits that sport and physical activity can provide.
