Active Movers

Helping Young Children Build Confidence Through Movement

The Dundee Active Schools Active Movers programme is designed specifically for children in Primary 1 to Primary 3, providing fun, engaging and inclusive physical activity opportunities during the school day.

Working closely with schools, Active Movers supports children at a key stage in their development, helping them build confidence, develop essential movement skills and establish positive attitudes towards physical activity from an early age.

The programme creates a supportive environment where every child can enjoy being active, experience success and develop skills that will benefit them both in and out of the classroom.

Developing Fundamental Movement Skills

The early primary years are an important time for children to develop the building blocks of movement and physical literacy.

Through a variety of games, challenges and fun activities, Active Movers helps children develop:

  • Running, jumping and balancing skills
  • Throwing and catching skills
  • Coordination and agility
  • Spatial awareness
  • Confidence in movement
  • Physical literacy and body awareness

These skills provide the foundation for future participation in physical education, school sport and active lifestyles.

Building Confidence and Wellbeing

At Active Schools, we understand that physical activity can have a positive impact on a child's confidence, wellbeing and overall school experience.

Active Movers gives children the opportunity to:

  • Try new activities in a safe environment
  • Build confidence through achievement and success
  • Develop positive relationships with peers
  • Improve communication and social skills
  • Learn through play and movement
  • Experience the enjoyment of being active

Every session is designed to be welcoming and supportive, ensuring children feel encouraged to participate and develop at their own pace.

Supporting Learning Through Physical Activity

Physical activity plays an important role in supporting children's development and readiness to learn.

By taking part in regular Active Movers sessions, children can benefit from:

  • Increased concentration and focus
  • Improved listening skills
  • Enhanced teamwork and cooperation
  • Better confidence in group settings
  • Positive behaviour and engagement

The programme complements the wider work of schools by helping children develop skills that support both learning and personal growth.

An Inclusive Approach

Inclusion sits at the heart of the Active Movers programme.

Activities are adapted to meet the needs of individual children, ensuring that all participants can enjoy and benefit from the sessions regardless of their previous experience, confidence or ability.

Our experienced staff create positive environments where children feel safe, valued and supported to take part.

The focus is always on participation, enjoyment and personal progress rather than competition.

Working in Partnership with Schools

Active Movers is delivered in close partnership with primary schools across Dundee.

By working alongside teachers and school staff, we can identify children who would benefit most from additional opportunities to develop their movement skills, confidence and engagement through physical activity.

This collaborative approach helps ensure the programme meets the needs of individual pupils while supporting wider school priorities around health and wellbeing.

Creating Positive Experiences

For many children, Active Movers provides an opportunity to discover that being active can be fun, rewarding and enjoyable.

By encouraging participation from an early age, the programme helps children:

  • Develop positive attitudes towards physical activity
  • Build confidence in their own abilities
  • Form healthy habits for the future
  • Enjoy being active with friends
  • Experience success through movement and play

These positive experiences can help lay the foundations for a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and sport.

Making a Positive Difference

The Active Movers programme supports children in Primary 1 to Primary 3 to become more active, more confident and more engaged through fun and inclusive physical activity experiences.

By focusing on fundamental movement skills, wellbeing and enjoyment, the programme helps young children develop the confidence, competence and motivation to be active both now and in the future.
