Active Schools Assistants are on-the-ground members of the Active Schools team, working directly with children and young people in schools and communities to create positive experiences through sport and physical activity. By supporting the delivery of activities, building relationships and working alongside schools, families and local partners, they help ensure more children and young people can access opportunities to be active.
No two days look the same for an Active Schools Assistant. Working directly with children and young people, they respond to the needs of their schools and communities by supporting activities, developing young leaders, building partnerships and creating opportunities for those who need them most. Every interaction is an opportunity not only to encourage participation in sport and physical activity, but also to help young people build confidence, develop friendships, discover new interests and feel connected to their school and community.
A key part of their role is engaging children and young people who are least likely to participate in sport and physical activity. Through a flexible, inclusive and person-centred approach, Active Schools Assistants help break down barriers, build confidence and connect young people with activities that reflect their interests, needs and aspirations.
Working closely with Active Schools Coordinators, schools, community clubs and local partners, they help strengthen pathways into lifelong participation, support the development of sustainable opportunities and nurture the next generation of participants, volunteers, leaders and coaches. Their work contributes to creating active, welcoming communities where every child and young person has the opportunity to belong, thrive and enjoy the lifelong benefits of being active.
